Day 24 of the 30 Day Challenge: Inspired by a book

There was only ever going to be one book (or series of books) I chose for today. I’ve been a fan of the Harry Potter books for more than ten years now and it was so much fun doing a tribute to them on my nails!

I wanted to keep it relatively simple, but still obvious enough what the theme was so I decided to do a take on the four houses at Hogwarts – Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. I also add a cheeky Potter lightning bolt scar onto my thumb.

I painted my thumb with Models Own Black Magic, my index finger with No7 Pillar Box, my middle finger with Barry M Blueberry Ice Cream, my ring finger with Barry M Yellow and my little finger with Sally Hansen Emerald Express.

I then used a striping brush to make the lightning bolt and stripes. The lightning bolt and index finger were done with Barry M Foil Effects Gold, the middle finger with LA Colors Bronze Bombshell, the ring finger with Models Own Black Magic and the little finger with Barry M Foil Effects Silver.

I’m so pleased with how it came out!

For this manicure I used:
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Base Coat
  • Models Own – Black Magic
  • Barry M – Foil Effects Gold
  • Barry M – Foil Effects Silver
  • Barry M – Blueberry Ice Cream
  • Barry M – Yellow
  • Sally Hansen – Emerald Express
  • LA Colors – Bronze Bombshell
  • No7 – Pillar Box
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Top Coat

Day 23 of 30 Day Challenge: Inspired by a movie

I am so absolutely chuffed with this manicure. It’s my first proper freehand paint!

Choosing a film was pretty tough, but Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory has been on the TV several times recently (the new one and the old one) so I thought I would do a tribute to that film. Personally, I prefer the first one so I based my nails on that film instead of the new one.

I used Barry M Matt White, Blueberry Ice Cream, Foil Efects Gold and LA Colors Bronze Bombshell as a base for each of my nails and then used acrylic paint to freehand the design with the world’s tiniest paintbrush. I will definitely be trying freehanding again.

My little finger is the one I am leats happy with – it shows a golden ticket, my ring finger has a shiny chocolate base with the Wonka ‘W’ on it, my middle finger shows loads and loads of the famous ever-lasting gobstoppers, my index finger shows a little oompa loompa, and finally my thumb shows my take on the lickable wallpaper.

What do you think? I can’t wait to see everyone else’s take on movies!

For this manicure I used:
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Base Coat
  • Barry M – Matt White
  • Barry M – Blueberry Ice Cream
  • LA Colors – Bronze Bombshell
  • Barry M – Foil Effects Gold
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Top Coat

Day 22 of the 30 Day Challenge: Inspired by a song

This week is definitely going to be a tough week… Week 1 was so easy when I just had to think about using red or blue or something. But ‘Inspired by a song’? Really?!

I was a bit worried about this one, but when my new Cheeky plates arrived this week gone I knew exactly what I was going to do. ‘God is a DJ’ is a song by one of my favourite bands ever – Faithless and having a stamp image that said it was so cool I had to use it. There are also quite a few other music related stamp images in the set so this gave me a great chance to use them!

I started by painting my nails with Models Own Black Magic and then used Konad Special Polish in White to stamp the patterns over the top of it. I think i like my index and ring fingers best!

For this manicure I used:
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Base Coat
  • Models Own – Black Magic
  • Konad Special Polish – White
  • Cheeky Plate CH30
  • Cheeky Plate CH31
  • Cheeky Plate CH51
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Top Coat

Day 21 of the 30 Day Challenge: Inspired by a colour

After the disaster that was the water marble nails, I give you one of the prettiest manicures I have ever done… if I may say so myself!

Today’s theme is ‘inspired by a colour’ and as this is a bit vague I decided to use a manicure using my favourite colour of something that color. Behold! Leafy nails!

I started by painting my nails with Barry M Mint Green and waited for them to thoroughly dry. I then used Cheeky Plate CH33 and Sally Hansen Emerald Express to stamp the leaf pattern over the top.

This is my first time stamping with this season’s cheeky plates and the quality is impressive. The pattern is picked up on the stamper perfectly every time and and as the images are a bit bigger than usual, the pattern covers my whole thumbnail!

I really wish I had kept this manicure on for more than just a day :(

For this manicure I used:
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Base Coat
  • Barry M – Mint Green
  • Sally Hansen – Exmerald Express
  • Cheeky Plate CH33
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Top Coat

Day 20 of the 30 Day Challenge: Water Marble

I have been dreading this day for so long.

I’ve done a water marble manicure before but it is just so much hassle I promised myself that I would never do it again. Well, apparently not. Water marble can give you a really nice effect but it’s time consuming and takes a considerable amount of redoing some nails that you didn’t like the outcome of. ALSO, it wastes so much polish it’s ridiculous.

My attempt this time was ok (ish) but in hind sight there are some things I would have changed. Firstly, I would have done a base coat of white so that the colours would be more vibrant on my nails. Secondly, I should have redone my middle and index fingers as they’re not as swirly as they could have been. My thumb looked awesome though!

It’s quite hard to explain how to do water marble nails as it’s a bit of a long process, but there is an excellent picture tutorial HERE and a great video one HERE if you are interested :)

The colours I used were Barry M Bright Pink and Barry M Spring Green which were good colours for marbling, especially the green. I have found that Barry M polishes are a good consistency for doing the water marble technique.

Have you ever tried water marbling?

For this manicure I used:
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Base Coat
  • Barry M – Bright Pink
  • Barry M – Spring Green
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Top Coat

Day 19 of the 30 Day Challenge: Galaxy nails

These may be the best nails I have EVER done. How cool are they?!

I’ve seen loads of different versions of galaxy nails before and I was so excited to try my own. I couldn’t believe how easy they were either!

I started by painting my nails with Models Own Black Magic and waited for it to dry. I then cut a bit off a bathroom sponge and dipped it in a bit of Barry M Matt White and dabbed curved lines onto my nails. I then used the same method to go over the white with Barry M Lemon Ice Cream and Barry M Bright Pink. Next I used the same method to go around the curved lines with Maybelline Midnight Blue to blend them in a bit. I dipped a toothpick in the white polish again and dotted on little stars and used a dotting tool to make the bigger stars. Finally I finished with a glittery topcoat to add extra sparkly stars.

Coolest manicure ever!

For this manicure I used:
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Base Coat
  • Models Own – Black Magic
  • Barry M – Matt White
  • Barry M – Lemon Ice Cream
  • Barry M – Bright Pink
  • Maybelling – Midnight Blue
  • LA Colors – Star Light
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Top Coat

Day 18 of the 30 Day Challenge: Half moon manicure

So after everyone saying how easy this manicure is, I completely disagree. It took such an effort to get it looking good enough!

For those who don’t know, you can achieve this effect with a bit of cheating. You know those holepunch protectors you can buy? You know, the little stickers that go around the holes in paper to stop them from ripping…well this effect is made using those.

I started by painting my nails with Barry M Bright Pink and then waited AGES to make sure the ink was completely dry. I then stuck one of the hole protectors over where the moon of my nail should be and made sure I pressed it down well so I would get straight lines. Next I painted the nails with Maybelline Midnight Blue, making sure to paint over the stickers a bit to get a clean line. Finally, I peeled off the stickers to show the pink moons underneath.

I’m bit annoyed that I got the moon wonky on my ring finger, but it’s not too unbearable…

For this manicure I used:
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Base Coat
  • Maybelline – Midnight Blue
  • Barry M – Bright Pink
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Top Coat

Day 17 of the 30 Day Challenge: Glitter

I cannot even tell you how excited I have been about doing this post. Glitter is one of my favourite things in the whole world to have on my nails so today was always going to be a lot of fun. The issue however would be which glitter to use..

Last Saturday my boyfriend and I went on a shopping trip to Westfields and I came back with the new Models Own Mirrorball polishes (among other things). There are five gorgeous glitters in this collection so it was quite hard to pick which one to choose. In the end I just shut my eyes and grabbed this one… Disco Inferno. LOVE the name. LOVE the polish.

I started by painting my nails with a base of Models Own Black Magic and then used the polish blobbing technique to get even coverage of the glitter over my nails. Models Own Mirrorball Disco Inferno has a clear base and is jam packed with gold, bronze and green glitter in all different shapes and sizes.

I love the cool random look it has with all the different coloured and different shaped glitter. It makes it look almost mosaicy. After trying this one out I really cannot wait to try out the rest of the collection. I’ll keep you posted :)

You can buy Models Own Mirrorball polishes from www.modelsownit.com for £5 a bottle or the whole collection plus a 3 in 1 clear polish for just £20! Or if you can manage to be patient enough, they’ll be in Boots stores as of the 3rd October. YOU MUST GET THEM.

For this manicure I used:
  • PVA Glue Base Coat
  • Models Own – Black Magic
  • Models Own – Disco Inferno
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Top Coat

Day 16 of the 30 Day Challenge: Tribal nails

Woop! My first attempt at tribal nails. I’m not entirely pleased with how they came out, but it’s not bad for a first attempt.

I started by painting my nails with a base of Barry M Matt White and then used acrylic paint in green, red and blue to paint the patterns on. Finally I used a black acrylic paint to draw on the outlines.

I think it’s quite a cool effect, but maybe I would choose different colours next time. Reckon it would look quite cool in pastel shades!

For this manicure I used:
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Base Coat
  • Barry M – Matt White
  • Acrylic paint – red, blue, green and black
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Top Coat

Day 15 of the 30 Day Challenge: Delicate print

Late post. Ergh. Excuse me if I make no sense…I just got back from the cinema seeing Total Recall with the boyfriend and I’m absolutely knackered.

Today’s theme is ‘delicate nails’ and I have absolutely no idea what that means so I just took that to mean a really detailed pattern. Naturally, I reached for my stamping plates and this is what I came up with. I think the pattern could be a little crisper but I still quite like it.

Delicate print – indoor with flash

I started by painting my nails with my favourite black – Models Own Black Magic. Then I used Barry M Foil Effects Gold and Cheeky Mega Plate B to stamp this pattern over the top. I actually managed to do all my nails first time which was a result!

For this manicure I used:
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Base Coat
  • Models Own – Black Magic
  • Barry M – Foil Effects Gold
  • Cheeky Mega Plate B
  • Revlon – Quick Dry Top Coat
